just a general inquiry... how long do you think it'd take to get from discovery bay to the eastern end of HK island (chaiwan / siu saiwan area)? I'm guessing it would be something like ferry from DB -> central and a metro from central -> chaiwan?

Yes - ferry to Central, then a 5+ minute brisk walk to the MTR thence to Chai Wan.
The ferry journey is 25-30 minutes.
For the MTR from MTR
the journey is 25 minute, with a frequency of every 3 minutes or so in peak hours.
So in the best case 1 hour plus however long you need to get to DB ferry pier and from Chai Wan
Could be like this:
- 10 minutes to get from your flat to the DB ferry pier (depending on where in DB)
- 25 minutes ferry
- 10 minutes walk to central MTR station
- 25 minutes from central to chai wan
- + x minutes walking depending on where you need to go
Could add up to about 1 hour and 15-20 minutes door to door.
Walk to DB Ferry > Ferry > Walk to Central MTR > MTR to Chai Wan > Walk to Work. You would be looking at around 1hr 15min I am guessing. Central to Chai Wan is about 30mins alone. Or, another answer is Too Far.
You should look at an apartment right out at the East end of the Island or look at over Kowloon side. You can get the MTR across the bay into Quarry Bay, change trains out to Chai Wan.
that sounds about right. i know people that work in quarry bay that make the commute everyday. (lived in db for over 6 years)
An alternative, if you are not working right near Chai Wan mtr station, is to hop on the 780 bus right next to the ferry pier.
