    High quality high insurance

    Hello,

I am looking for good quality health insurance to cover things like surgery in a private hospital. Does anyone have any suggested providers? If so, what type of average cost should I expect to pay?

I am in my late 20s, healthy, not overweight, and a non smoker.

The average cost you would expect to pay will be more than the average cost you would expect to pay if you just paid the hospital bills directly. If this were not so then insurance companies would not be viable businesses.

What a load of rubbish! The average claim of all insured people may be less than the cost of insurance, but you don't insure to cover the average claim. You insure to cover big claims. I recently had surgery here and the claim size was equivalent to about 40 or 50 years' worth of premiums. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to pay that myself.

We are with ALC Health (Axxa Group) and pay app. HKD 10 000 per month, family of four. They cover just about any treatment in private hospital, even a private room if you so wish.

You clearly don't understand averages, statistics, or the insurance business!

And surgery here is available more or less for free. It's extra hotel services that can cost a bit.

I clearly do, as I have recently had surgery here. Yes I understand you can get surgery "nearly free" in the public system. But top surgeons here don't work in both systems, they work in one or the other. If you want your choice of surgeon there is no option but to pay. I was having shoulder surgery, the outcome of which will impact my ability to participate in sport and be pain free for the rest of my life. I wanted my surgeon to be none less than a highly experienced shoulder surgeon with a good reputation. If you use the public system you get whoever's on duty at the time if your surgery. They may or may not be a specialist in your condition.

I have no issues at all using the public system for minor conditions, but for major conditions, I want choices, that medical insurance gives me which I couldn't afford to pay for myself.

Really? Although I don't have first hand experience, my impression from what I've heard from people who do is that for non-emergency surgery in the public system you are referred to a specific surgeon with whom you have preliminary examinations & discussions and who then carries out the surgery at an agreed date. Presumably if, after the initial examination, you are not happy with the first referral there is some mechanism for "second opinions".

As it happens I shall be visiting an orthopedic surgeon (in the public system at QMH) with my helper (at her request) tomorrow since she is in need of shoulder surgery following a traffic accident. I shall be much more familiar with the process after that.

Oh, and I don't see how having had surgery recently shows that you "clearly do" understand averages, statistics or the insurance business.

From what I know about insurance is you don't necessarily end up with 'choice'. Firstly, insurance companies always have panel doctors. These are not necessarily an expert in the field that you want (or I suppose even good in their own field - haha). Also insurance agents always have 'recommendations' of doctors but I hear there are sometimes more because of familiarity or reward, not so much because of actual merit of the doctors' skill. I suppose the best people to recommend are those who see outcomes, eg previous patients, ward nurses, ?forum pages.
I believe the government system is good although the waiting time is long.
