Recommend me a female doctor who speaks English?

I live in West Kowloon. Can any one recommend a doctor for me to go to? I need one that's going to be able to help me with girly problems so a female doctor who specialises in this is preferred.. and speaks English of course. The closer to my location the better but whatever.

Also I've never been to a doctor in HK before. Do I just walk in? Or do I need to call and book an appointment.
I've never taken a sick day off yet either. Is that a walk in thing too to get a doctors note?

I feel a bit lost since all the doctors on my street are written in Chinese...

Do you need a general practitioner or gynecologist?

It rather depends what girly things you need sorted. I discovered a few weeks back that something that in NZ was done by a general practitioner was only done by "special" gynecologists here in HK. So you may need to go to a GP and find out from there. Pretty much every doctor in HK speaks English, even in local areas where all the signs are in Chinese. You can get a list of doctors from various websites. Frankly - I would just walk in to somewhere close to your work and start from there. YOu are not committed to any doc just by walking in. Your alternative is something like Quality Healthcare clinics (a list on their website) - they are private but I've had good experiences with them.

In my experience, receptionists speak practically no English, so ringing up for an appointment is hopeless (unless you speak Canto). Just walk into the clinic early (as soon as they open) and try and get something sorted in person. Good luck.

I should have specified. Forgot about gynaecology as a medical specialisation (thought it was just women's health). Yes, need a gynaecologist. But I genuinely have no idea how I can go see one. I guess just take your advice and go see any doctor...
Fun times are to be had walking into a local chinese clinic trying to explain that.

    Anyway, thanks.
I feel stupid asking these questions, but it really differs from the UK.

Don't worry Lisa89, the first time going to the doctor in HK is bound to make you apprehensive just because it's different from the UK. I was exactly the same when I moved here. I tried various local doctors as well as Quality Health and it wasn't always the most fun experience.

I can recommend a great female GP in Central (so short hop on the MTR for you). Her name is Dr Sarah Borwein and she's at Central Health on Duddell Street. She's Canadian. Central Health is very much focused on expats (Cathay is one of their big clients) so all the receptionists, pharmacists etc speak perfect English. This does, of course, come at a premium (GP appt costs around $600). You can make an appt by phone or email. They also have gynaecologists within the practice.

    This is their website:
    http://www.centralhealth.com.hk/index.html

If/when you need a sick note, you need to see a doctor (just ring and ask for a same day appt) and they will write it. Same as the UK except HK employers seem to demand sick notes for even 1 or 2 days sickness (depending on the employer). Personally I think it's a stupid system but I don't make the rules ;-)

I also go to Central Health and I see Dr Kay Chan who is a GP/gyno. She's great - very approachable and good at what she does. Standard consultation is $850.00.

I rang to make an appointment and filled out some paperwork when I got there and that's all that's required to register. I tried a local clinic recently in Olympic but the doctor refused to prescribe the medication I wanted the repeat prescription for. Back to Central I went!

Anyway, good luck Lisa. I know how intimidating it can be, hope you find someone you feel comfortable with.

I go to Dr Christine Choy at Care For Women, 302 New World Tower 1, 18 Queens rd Central, HK island. Phone 3112 0480. The receptionist there is helpful and speaks English. Dr Choy is UK trained as well and is very knowledgeable and sympathetic.

    Female doc who speaks English

    Hi Lisa89,

you're better off heading over to HK side. Not saying that doctors on Kowloon side can't speak English but you'll probably encounter a smoother experience at places where you're not struggling to understand what they're saying. Two docs I use: Gloria Pei Kim in Central 2574-6211; 3651-8888 but her fees can run steep
and sometimes I just walk in to HK Sanatorium in Happy Valley where I see Dr. Leung Tsang. She's a resident/GP and will refer you onwards. Her fees aren't too bad. I recall a few weeks back I paid $250 for a visit.
    Best of luck!

Forget the Pei kim's etc you want Rosemary, Dr Rosemary Barnett, she's at OT&P 1/f, Razor Hill Centre, Clear Water bay Road, Pik Uk, NT.

    Nicest doc in Hong Kong.
