Asthma - chinese med vs western mef

my 10 yr old has asthma. taken chinese herbal and std western med for a year or so but condition not really improved. after attack again last night i hv to take him to. respiratory specialist. he will no doubt give him inhaler. what the traditional chinese say about inhalers and steroids is not too comforting. what is the right thing to do? the trad chinese doctor hasn't been able to cure root of problem and the western doctor drugs are sypmtamtic and harmful apparently. what is the best thing to fo for my son

Move to a less polluted part of Hong Kong perhaps.

"harmful apparently"? How so? I know an awful lot of people (myself included) who used asthma meds throughout childhood and basically just grew out of asthma. I'd say stick to Western medication and wait for him to get a lot older. Complement it with Chinese medicine if you want, but do not ditch the clinically proven Western stuff otherwise it's potentially life threatening in severe cases.

Asthma is a scary thing to have as a kid, but the only person I know who has not (mostly) grown out of it is also a chronic smoker, so he's chose to keep asthma along with nicotine.

As an aside, please make the effort to write like a grown up. I almost always ignore posts that are written so badly, but I am sympathetic to a kid with asthma, because I grew up the same way and know exactly how little fun it is.

The simplest advice is often the best.

Why do you think so many families leave for Singapore, the air here is total shite.

    or out of HK completely.

to the OP: asthma kills, sorry to be blunt but you need to remember this when worrying about inhalers

some parts of nt has significantly less pollution, used to live sha tau kok, very clean air compared to other parts of hk, I have asthma since I was a child, its better in hk as I drive less, more exercise (gym rather than outdoors), avoid heavy long walks/exercise or sports on days of heavy pollution

also like likely of dust mites in hk as carpets are less common in hk, avoid keeping cats as well

one advantage in hk, both ventolin and salbutamol inhalers don't require prescription
