Hong Kong health insurance giant tightens reimbursement policy | South China Morning Post

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Have seen first hand how the doctors here play the system. When I was a HK newbie I believed my surgeon that I needed a colonoscopy under anesthetic, and didn't know about the charging differences according to room. Ended up in private room at the Matilda with a final bill around $60grand, mostly paid for by insurance.

Last colonoscopy/gastro in private clinic in Causeway Bay-$9,000, and a confirmation that I didn't need the anesthetic.

Last year after spine surgery again in Matilda was given a very effective pain killer, Oxynorm/oxycodone. Bill for less than one full box-$9,000 combined with $150 sticking plasters and $100 paracetamol tablets.

A full box of Oxy from surgeon-$1,000.
