I was of the understanding that you needed to be married to be listed as the father on the birth certificate, and came in to ask OP to double check that, but errr... i guess OP has other stuff to sort out first. Wow.

Is that HK specific? Certainly doesn't apply in many other countries.

Great thread. Especially liked the part where it all unravelled.

You don’t need to be married in HK for father to be on the BC.

No it doesn't. The same happened to a friend's helper and they renewed her visa without a hitch despite it being expired for 8 months. There are differences in certain cases.

    1) You had permission to stay and all paperwork was in place, but you just forgot to renew the visa. Intent is hard to proof in this case and most likely you'll just get an eye-roll from immigration.

    2) Your work contract ended and you didn't go home. In that case there are no excuses and the penalties are a lot harsher.

Thanks for clarifying. Not sure where I got that from but good to know. Found this to back it up

TLDR: need a few different documents when you're lodging the birth registration documents.

Anyway, not relevant here but good to clarify it in case someone stumbles upon this thread another day.
