Quality of ophthalmologist in HK comparison

    Hi.

Anyone know how does HK rank in terms of eye medical care?

Like for treating serious eye disease, like glaucoma. Comparing to places like USA and Europe.

    Thanks!

I tend to think it is always a choice between Cheaper, Faster and Better. You get to pick two.

One of our relatives is in the govt system for cataract - got them removed competently for $3000 (both eyes, including lens costs). The wait time was very significant and new patients have to wait about 2-3 years.

On the other hand, we know a couple of folks who have been through the eye department at HK Sanitarium and have nothing but good things to say about it - but the cost is significant and quality of care is certainly up there in terms of global standards.

The problem is, most people will fall in the middle - going to see random specialists based on GP recommendations - no clue, seems to be luck of the draw.

i have been seeing a private eye doctor in Central. It is indeed not cheap. The test machines all looks very new and high tech. I had all the tests done at the office in 3 days, and then had an MRI in 1 week. The doc there is very good at listening and explaining.

i just had my first appointment at Tuen Mun eye hospital. I have never been to a gov't hospital before in my life. It was packed with patients. It was definitely much different than the place in Central. I am now waiting 4 weeks for two simple tests. Yes, indeed, govt is slow.

Some things cannot be dealt with in HK - they will refer to Moorfields in London or Liverpool
