Question Help: Toddler seizure - MRI / EEG / paediatrician & hospital recommendations please

    Hi All,

Our 18-month baby has started having some episodes where her eyes roll to the back of her head for a couple of seconds. She then returns back to normal and smiles, as though nothing has happened...but does point to her forehead (above the eyebrow) to perhaps indicate pain.

We met a paediatrician at the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (they were the only ones open on a Sunday night). We were told that it doesn't seem to be the classic sign of seizure. We were discharge, told to observe longer, and to - in the future - consider doing an MRI of the brain + EEG (electroencephalogram) to rule out seizure / epilepsy / etc.

    So, two questions:

    1. Has anyone had any sort of similar experience that they can share / provide advice?

    2. Any recommendations for hospitals in the Kowloon or Hong Kong Island area that would be recommended for MRI + EEG (or relevant) testing? Would be keen to explore other options beyond Baptist Hospital. Private or public is fine.

Have you had a look at the children's hospital?

My daughter had some episodes like that when she was younger than 18 months, doctor said it was normal, not sure if/when they are supposed to "grow out of it." I do know that their eye muscles are not all that fully developed.

I would highly recommend you go book an appointment with Dr Benny Wu at St Tereasa's Hospital in Kowloon, lots of parents book him so get appointment.

Hes very through and ask if him if MRI or any other tests is required. He should be able to set it up for you and do it in the hospital or if not then get a recommendation letter. you can do the mri at Langham Place, Mong Kok

Go to your local general outpatient department ,book via the HA go app or by phone, and ask the doctor there for a referral to the neurology specialist outpatient department of children's hospital ' mri brain for infants will require sedation by the way due to long scan time '

I'm sorry to hear about this and it must be indeed frightening. I saw him for myself (MRI) and my child (brain scan as well).Everything was fine and he took a lot of weight of my mind.
But before you see him, you should see Dr.Ada Yung.

Dr. Ada Yung is a paediatric neurologist and she is very famous for her expertise. She is in Tsim Sha Tsui. Everyone knows her .

    fantastic doctor

from my experience , Dr. Yung could identify what was the problem when several other pediatrics could not. (I got turned down by the head of the paediatric dept of a very famous private hospital in ***** valley and got referred away)

Thank you @MABinPengChau! Very grateful for your input. How long did it take for your daughter to "grow out of it"?

Thank you for all your input! I am incredibly grateful to you all. We met a neurologist and have been advised to wait 2 weeks to see if she grows out of it before doing an MRI or EEG. I can't thank you all enough!

I have epilepsy and it is well controlled with meds. Eye rolling is one way epilepsy presents itself. Other ways can be repetitive shaking of a limb, zoning out for a few seconds and not recalling what happened, the weird form that Dostoyevsky had that caused him to write 800 page novels, and my type: a full tonic-clonic or clonic-tonic seizures, where one collapses and shakes on the ground (I fell onto my bed.. lucky me!) with eyes rolling and shaking every limb for 8 minutes turning blue in the face and freaking the wife out, then waking up to a team of medics in my flat wondering why they were there. I had no recall of what had happened. Queen Mary Hospital is the best because of its close association with HKU. Good luck and do get an MRI asap, if appropriate. The public system can be slow with MRI's, but they can also refer you to HKU's machine in Pokfulam, which costs $5,000 for a scan within a few days.
