Adult ADHD - Doctor for Diagnoses?

I am looking for a doctor who can help in diagnose ADHD among adults (36 yrs old male) . I have been told that most doctor deal with kids and it's better to look for someone who specializes in dealing with adults as it can be a different experience. I didn't find much information online. Money is not an issue, would prefer someone with good reviews.

I've always wanted to see if I had ADHD. My son does. My wife suspects that I do as well. It sure would explain a lot

Dr. Andrew Adler of Adler Family Centre.

I also needed the services a while back for my daughter. He is very professional and has extensive knowledge and not " green" .

What do you mean by "green"?

"green" as in they are newly qualified with only a few years of experience. You will see many who advertise but do not tell you how many years experience they have.

If money is an issue then in the public service just go along to your nearest general outpatient department :
Just be up front and Say you have this this and this symptom and think you have adhd and could you get a referral to a psychiatrist . They may have in house psychology access n some clinics .
Be prepared for a long wait to see the psych but once your into psych services here it's quite good with wide range supports advanced practice nurses dedicate social workers : home visits etc .
Any workup you need like scan or blood they will do before the psych to exclude any organic cause

Interestingly this was a recommendation that a retired doctor passed onto me a couple of days ago when I asked for good value psychiatric services.

    Also St James...

I was a team leader in the UK and had an adult ADHD member in the team. I'm new on the forum but if you want to private message me, I can certainly go over the characteristics which were unique to this chap. You may find they're similar. The biggest issues we faced were one - people didn't know about ADHD, including myself at the time and two - in "no mistakes possible" jobs (and there are a few) a person with ADHD just isn't suited.

As I say, PM me if you like, or not:-)
The guy in my team was a great human being, but as his boss he was also my nightmare. Or hopefully find someone who specialises in this, though people with ADHD often have such distinctive traits that a professional diagnosis is often no more than running through a checklist.

I did have a professional psychologist diagnose Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the same team (but that's another story! :-)

Adult ADHD can probably be traced back to childhood onset. Diagnosis and treatment are more removed from the controversies surrounding childhood ADHD. Medication (i.e. Ritalin) is less objectionable, and there is a new attitude of experimentation/trial. Feel free to PM me as I am on the front-line.
