Shadowing a Doctor / Hospital Volunteering

Hi All,

Am new to this forum but thought someone here might be able to help with some advice on how to get some experience shadowing a Doctor here in Hong Kong or get volunteer work in a Hospital or Hospice when you are a non-Cantonese speaker (am learning Cantonese but just not good enough yet to be able to use it proficiently).

Am originally from UK, working here currently but intending to apply to Medical School in UK in September after deciding to go for a career change. To do this I need to get some relevant experience whilst still working full time at my current job to save up enough money to fund my medical degree.

I've been finding it very hard to find a hospital willing to take on an English only speaker as a volunteer and wouldn't know where to start on getting a Doctor who would let me shadow them and so was hoping an expat Doctor or someone similar working in a Hospital or Hospice setting might take pity on me and offer some advice or help to achieve my aims.

The best experience for you would likely be within the hospital authority : realistically this would be in an outpatient setting. To be considered for this I would suggest you put some work into a research proposal relevant to the department you are interested in . You could then approach the chief of service and see if they can accommodate you . Offering to assist with any departmental write ups particularly English proof reading will be very well received I can assure you . Look at what skills you already have that may be relevant.your lack of Cantonese won't be an issue as you won't have direct patient contact in any event .
