    Shaving suggestions

ive recently turned 30, and ive noticed that my face acne is directly related to my shaving. i tested this by only shaving part of my face for an extended period of 2 months. the rest of my face was only trimmed with a clipper. oh yeah...i looked bad ass.

the part trimmed with clippers is perfectly fine and clear.
the part shaved with a razor is covered in acne every single day.

    so...how to solve this problem?
easy answer is to not shave, however to my unfortunate luck i am one of those freaks that has patches that will not grow hair. so i dont want to look like a balding poodle.

i have tried many of razors in my life, from single blade to double, to currently using gillete mach-3. i see there is 4 blades, and i think maybe 5 was there too...but i am doubting the addition of more blades is going to solve this.

i have sensistive skin (remember..im a freak ) and so i tried using a numerous amounts of shaving foams and gels. currently im using nivea sensitive foaming glide...or something like that. it feels amazingly soft like its pure air, and i can barely feel a razor on my skin when i use this stuff...so i feel like its not the problem.

i rinse my blade with warm water after every stroke or 2.

i dont know what else to do to fix this problem. does anyone have a suggestion?

I'm breakout prone and I have really sensitive skin myself. I've started disinfecting my razor before use and it seems to help.

I use a Dovo Shavette (straight razor with disposable blades) and the sensitive skin shaving soap from classicshaving.com. I lather it up with a boar hair brush I got from Classic Shaving, and then I disinfect my razor and the new blade with isopropyl alcohol. After rinsing it off, I shave. Seems to work for me!

One of my friends had a similar condition and he found that Noxzema shaving cream helped.

I am not sure if Noxzema is available in HK, you may have even tried this brand.

I would also support the suggestion of using an electric razor, the new philishave models are, IMO, as good as a razor.

LAB series shaving products work well on guys whom I know.

    LabSeries | SHAVE

Also make sure that you moisturise (with a simple, non-greasy, non-perfumed product) right after each shave, otherwise the dryness will exacerbate the discomfort from the broken skin.

If all fails, see a dermatologist. They should be able to recommend "specialist" products / medication to you.

every time i go to dermatologist...they give me Cetaphil...which never helps.

as for electric shavers...i have been told that they are very rough on your skin, and that they will irritate sensitive skin very badly. this was what i was told many years ago. are they much better now for use with sensitive skin?

as for the straight edge shaver....are they difficult to use? ive never used that before

Electric shavers irritate the hell out of my skin. Straight edges can too (especially when you first start using them) and it takes a few years to get their use down. In your first year, you might lop an ear off/scar yourself permanently. lol

im considering getting this Art of Shaving Kit, as ive heard fantastic reviews of their products.
has anyone seen these in HK? or do i need to order from USA? (edit - nevermind...they carry them in lane crawford)

and ive heard a few mention elsewhere that the razors with vibration (fusion?) are a big difference. anyone use that before?

i had the same problem with acne related to shaving -solved almost completely when i by chance switched to the gillete mach3 (it vibrates as it shaves) -i think thats the model-the one in the orange packaging from wellcome

i was very sceptical at first but it really gives a brilliant fast close shave and you only need one pass to do a great job

remember change new blades/batteries frequently and rinse before each new pass

btw i use brut shave cream in the tube(and also fauldings brand from australia) that you can get at any of the older style pharmacies -the shave cream in the tube seems to get the skin cleaner and a smoother shave -though it was the change to the vibrating multiblade that really made a noticable difference
