    Too much Salmon?

i know eating too much salmon supposedly can give you mercury poisoning...but how much is too much?

my problem is i love salmon, and its so easy to prepare. i just throw some lemon, or spices, or my fave honey and soy, and throw it on grill pan or in the broiler for a few minutes and dinner is served.

i normally eat it 2 nights a week for dinner, and will also have it once or twice for a lunch.

also...can anyone recommend some similar fish i can try that are similar in texture to the salmon? i dont like rubbery foods, and i dont like fatty foods.

Does it not rather depend on where your salmon comes from? I'd be really surprised, for example, if NZ salmon gave you mercury poisioning but would expect any fish caught in these waters or anywhere else in China to be suspect in large quantities....

It's a pretty healthy diet otherwise - I'd say salmon is really good for you! The similarest fish I have found (is that a word?) is a trout. Slightly smaller, but very similar flesh. NO idea if they are available here.

I stopped eating all seafood inc imported fresh water fish, when we moved to Hong Kong. I refuse to support the irresponsible fishing practices employed here, or willing to eat seafood caught in such polluted waters. The consumption habits here are out of control.

If I had my way I'd increase the cost of all seafood/fish in Asia to 25 times its current prices, to reduce consumption/demand.

When the fish reserves are reduced to zilch within the next 2 decades ( thy're at less than 30% currently ) in the seas around China, atleast it will give the Australian Navy some target practice, when China fishing fleets are busted in AUS waters, caught illegally fishing.

Wow, remember the days when you could camp by a crystal clear river, out in the country, fishing, catching a trout, or a red fin, or two, picnic lunch, a few glasses of red, only catching what was going to be consumed.

    Those were the days.. Sigh.

good on you skyhook. i stopped eating fish about 8 months after i stopped eating meat. the fish i stopped eating for the reasons you mentioned, plus i did some looking at how fish were farmed, both artificially and in the ocean.. pretty horrible.

my reasons for not eating meat are many, one of them being i don't like the thought of some beast being slayed for my lunch, but each to their own.

back to the original question, agree wtih movingin07 - not sure you can overdo it, and the metals depend on the source of the fish, not the sauce

If you can find it, arctic char. It's kind of a cross between salmon and trout, taste-wise.

Did anyone see the memorial in the SCMP the other day for the bluefin tuna - the hugely expensive one? That was pretty sad - I hope it raised some awareness.

while i agree with the atrocities occurring around the world with how most meat and seafood is obtained, what else is there? i mean you can watch so many documentaries on any food you like, and be completely disgusted by what goes into it.

it seems like the only healthy and mentally sound thing to do is have everyone farm/fish for their own food.

anyways, thanks for suggestions. ill have to look closer at what im buying. All i know is they only carry one type of salmon in the fresh fish section of PnS...but im doubting its going to be the good stuff.
