Look as explained by disco bay deleting files is simple. But if you truly never want the files to be recovered there is realy no way to do it permanently (exept with a hammer). Yes you can get programmes that claim to do it to the same standards as the american goverment blah blah blah, but even they cannot do it comletely.

Most programmes when deleting just overwrite the info with random ones and zeros, the u.s govt does it to the equivalent of six layers (last I heard) and new files just overwrite that.

But no delted info is 100% safe or unfindable to a determined person, even ebay recommend if you think their may be files or data you want kept private then dont sell your used hard drive.

Just trying to help was not being funny.

    Try here http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads...n-program.html

The information isn't 100% safe, but no-one will be able to get at it because the equipment does not exist. Here's the rebuttal to Mr Gutmanns paper:

anyway i don't think u need a program for that.
u delete away the files you want to be kept private, download a big file like 100M or 50M, maybe one of those games or mp3 movie.

create a directory and copy/paste the big file over and over again until your hard disk is full. then delete the files that u have copied.
this should have overwritten most things that you do not want seen by others.

Thanks everyone. I'll delete the files and then download a big movie!

make sure the copy and paste is physical files, and not just the shortcuts. 8-P

For the future use, good idea is as well to create an encrypted partition to store your sensetive data with truecrypt (open source?) or buy a program to compleatly encrypt your hdd such as that offered from http://pgp.com/products/wholediskencryption/index.html
