    P2P and fibre

    Hi ,

I am using PCCW 30mb service and my contract expiring soon.I am paying 256 HKD per month for this.
I spoke to HGC who are offering me a 10 mb plan for 2 years contract.
They said it's fibre and P2P.I have no clue what that means but the price is really loe(128 hkd per month). Can someone please explain what it means exactly. Is 10 fibre + p2p going to better or atleast same as what I have now.??

Either you misunderstood the sales person, or they were randomly throwing vaguely technical terms at you.

Fibre is the alternative to copper cabling. You can run all sorts of speeds over both.

P2P is what people to use for (mainly illegal) filesharing via Bitorrent.

The real question is: what do you use your internet line for, and how good a provider is HGC. You know the answer to the first. Other people can probably chime in for HGC experiences (or you could do a search).

So as far as browsing speed is concerned, will it make any difference if i move from 30 mb without fibre and p2p to 10 mb fibre and p2p.?

Is this another case of the misleading phrase 'point2point' being used - meaning that your line from home to the ISP is rated at 10mbit, but they won't promise you any particular speed from the ISP to the 'net?

Going with the slightly annoying local habit of randomly replacing phrases by abbreviations, like talking about 'LD' when they mean 'long distance relationship'...

You mean browsing with Internet Explorer/Safari/etc?

    It will make zero difference.

Like doing OT, taking AL or looking at the mon(itor)? I'm not sure if it's a step above Singlish, or a step below.
