Hong Kong HDTV Format / Standard?

    Heloo everyone!

Can someone tell me if we can import an HDTV from the UK to Hong Kong? A friend who is moving to Hong Kong has a couple of new ones which he'd rather bring here than sell for a loss.

Is the HDTV standard in Honkers the same as UK?

The issue is the Digital TV broadcast standard, not HDTV format (which is a single global set of standards).

If the TV has a built in Digital Tuner of the DVB-T type which is the standard for Europe then the tuner will not work in Hong Kong, which uses the Chinese GB20600-2006 standard.

However, the bulk of the English language TV here is on the IP-TV (Welcome to now-tv.com) service. Most of this is still standard definition, although HD is now starting as well. To watch these TV channels your friend will simply plug the video output of the IP-TV box into the video and sound inputs of his TV and bypass the tuner.

The display could also be used to watch the broadcast HDTV channels by use of an external tuner plugged into the video inputs of the TV. These cost about HK$2000 I believe.
