Thanks for all your help everyone.

AussBen - when you say 'Basic' media center - what would be an example of a more advanced one?

And is it possible to play MP4's through the PS3?

e.g something like a Mythtv setup.

When I was in Australia, I had one front end computer and a back end server with 2 DVB-T cards and one DVB-S card. The front end just a barebone with ram and cpu, the OS (Linux) ran off the usb drive. The optical out went to the receiver, the back end server would take out the adverts and transcode. It also acted as a file server, dhcp, dns and mail server.

Mythtv supports everything MCE does, but takes a little longer to setup. But once you have it setup, you can add as many front ends as you want in different rooms, they can play music, watch videos, watch tv, watch satellite. The more tuners you ad the more simultaneous tv shows you can watch on different front ends.

Where as the ps3 does not have the tuner functionality.
