Is it me or is the memory on Dell Desktops too expensive?
I need dual core proc with two discs and 8GB RAM.
Is it just cheaper to buy the barebones Dell system and then add the RAM and discs in?

Not just you, they try and charge you about $1000 for 1gb of ddr 667 ram which retails for $390 in any of the computer centres for example.
