Intreging mouse problem

I have a problem that is slowly driving me nuts - more than usual anyway.

The mouse appears to perform multiple clicks even though I only perform one action.

The problem goes thus -
1) clicking on a link, if it is above another page with a link below the area of the click, it often will open that link below. That is the first action is made and it is still active as it " sees " the link below. Even tough I don't physically see or do it.

2) In cut / copy operations it does not always keep the dragged selection. Sometimes I have to keep the area selected and wait with it selected to complete the copy / cut operation on the right hand button. It is the norm to have multiple attempts just to get a selection of the area.

I have done all the things I can to slow down the clicking. I have cleaned the mouse internal ( generic optical mouse ) .

Reading the tech boards I found and article in regard of Linux OS that this problem may be about having two drivers installed and them competing / working against each other. Removing one cures the problem. Both are in different locations.

As I am using XP SP2 I cannot follow that route as I wouldn't know ( apart from the drivers file ) where the secondary driver location may be.

It may be the dual driver thing as I have recently swapped around graphic cards and there may be a conflict somewhere.

What is the answer ? I have had this going on for a month and its getting on my nerves.

The quickest and easiest route I would take would be to reach for a spare mouse and see if the problem persists. If it does, add a few points toward it being a driver or computer-side problem. (I've read the post three times to ensure you hadn't already mentioned trying this.)

If the problem goes away with the substitute mouse, then it may hint its predecessor was on the fritz.

As for drivers in XP, the area to first check is the Device Manager. From the Start menu, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. In the System Properties window, the Hardware tab reveals the Device Manager button.

The two areas to expand and check -- mine are listed thusly:

+ Human Interface Devices
-- Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical

+ Mice and other pointing devices
-- Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical

If you're sporting a hardcore gamer mouse that mandates installing its own drivers for extracting maximum performance, that's one thing. For me, any off-brand mouse that can't work using the default "MS Compatible" mouse drivers is a deal-breaker for exactly this scenario.

If you are using a Microsoft mouse, you can try downloading the latest Intellipoint drivers from Microsoft's site, then go back into Device Manager to right-click Uninstall the existing listing before installing the newer ones. The Intellipoint driver install contains a setup wizard that lists virtually every model of mice from Microsoft and configures accordingly.

Thanks for this and I DID try the first item ( another mouse ) but had not mentioned.

Done the rest and found under mouse to be two items
PS/2 compatible and a Wacom Mouse.

Wacom because I have a digital tablet that actually works with non of the trouble the mouse has. I shall play about disabling each and monitor the results.
