    Ok, Linksys wireless prob

Yup another one to add to the archive.

I have set up my Linksys WRT160N behind my DSL modem(netvigator).

I have cabled my main desktop to the Linksys successfully.

Trying to connect my laptop to it is a prob.

I put in the hardware identification number of the router.
It sees the SSID and names the connection the same.
I put in the WAP2 password I set on the router.
Tries to configure the connection and it fails to configure and just stops the connection wizard.

    Any thing to try?

    Cheers
    Colin

Try it without any password protection. If that works then maybe there's some incompatibility in the protection scheme between your laptop and your router. You could consider an alternative mechanism, such as a MAC address white-list.

so, open up the router for everyone else around me to jump on baord? don't like the sound of that or are you talking about something else?

Yeah I saw the whitelist page on the router page. I'll give that a whirl.

Try it without any password protection TEMPORARILY to verify that the hardware is actually working OK. If it works OK, then move on to setting some security mechanism.

ok, so I removed the security on the router.

restarted my laptop. and tried to connect to the router.

    entered the device number

chose no security on the connection and clicked next on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup Wizard.

here's the weird part. the wireless icon disappears from the task bar. and the wizard says it "Failed to get the wireless settings, configuration failed"

BUT I can browse the internet at that point!

BUT if I close that Wi-Fi Protected Setup wizard the connection drops and the wireless icon disappears from the task bar!

Weird! But it just dropped it actually as I was typing this. Hmmmm this is frustrating!

Oh linksys connection problems never seen /experienced one of those before :P
Seems linksys it more prone to brkick n break than to actually work.

    try this:

    1.
Disable all security such as WEP,WAP, clear any whitelist you have.

    2.
Try to manually type in an IP for your notebook.
something like 192.168.1.20 and set the router ip 192.168.1.1(usualy) as your DNS.

    3.
Disconnect the cable attached computer from your router.

    4.
Restart router (unplug power for 30sec)

    5.
try to connect using your manually set IP

    6.
if it doesn't work, go to the toolbox, get the biggest hammer or other suitable object and trash your crap linksys mail them the pieces, and go buy a Netgear router and live a happy life of painless wireless connectivity.

If you've got a Linksys WRT router, try installing the Tomato firmware, it's much better and apparently "turns a shitty $40 router into a $400 router".

    Tomato Firmware | polarcloud.com

In general, Linksys and D-Link routers just cause infinite hassles. But at least the Tomato firmware's supposed to be good.

Also just double check your computer can support WPA and which version. Like the time I couldn't connect my Nintendo DS to the router only to find out it only supports WEP... in which case use MAC whitelisting. It's not foolproof as it's pretty easy to spoof a MAC address, but WEP is worthless.

Are you using the built-in Windows Wireless Zero Configuration or a third-party application on the laptop? I recommend using the Windows one.
Place the laptop close to the Linksys but not connected.
When your laptop scans for wireless networks do you see your Linksys' SSID and only one?
When you double-click your Linksys entry in the list of wireless networks the status (in the top right corner) should change to "acquiring network address" and then "connected". Once it has double-click the wireless network icon in the taskbar notification area (bottom right near the clock). Then click the "support" tab and check the IP Address and Default Gateway that you have been allocated.
