    Time to retire it.

Actually, I would suggest that it ought to be "retired" as it is not "Man-enough" for today's workload requirements, and even if a replacement battery was forthcoming - I would consider it as chucking good money away if a new battery was available even.

Perhaps the only semi-willing recipient of this "Dinosaur" would be a 'pina who wanted it for simple Skype etc.

Even the Laptops I have given to my maid were of a much better specification.

Sometimes "Beggars can't be choosers" - so someone might be very happy to get it free, or nearly free.

But for this:- "Include me Out".

Buy two, one for work and one for home, or you're gonna have to lug that desktop fan module/rest as well.

Certainly a cheap fix, minus the mucking around...

If you have a USB socket - you do have one or more? - then a USB DVD drive ain't too expensive - especially if got secondhand here or "another" abnoxious place in HK.

Don't even have to go as far as Huaqiang Bei Lu in Shenzhen. I would bet you could get what you needed from Sham Shui Po.

If this ever happens with a future laptop, you can just get the old Lithium cells swapped out and replaced at a place in SSP that specialises in this kind of thing.

Thumbs up Oh - the joys of SEG Plaza in the Futian District!

Actually, if one HAS the time & easy access to Commie China, a trip to Futian District's SEG Plaza & adjacent HUGE computer shopping malls is an "eye-opener" as to what is available!

Even before I discovered the delights of these multitude of computer & parts outlets at Futian, I was barely satisfied with Golden Centre & Apliu Street in ShamShuiPo.... & discovered a huge markup on the price of batteries there, if, indeed they were available in HK. when my wanderings took me to my new "Mecca" in Futian!

I dealt with battery manufacturers' "Outlet" shops in SEG. Plaza for about half the price of HK, if it was possible to get in HK after persistent seeking.

NO great problem to get there, it's 6 stops down the line from Shumchun's Lowu station & a few minutes walk from the back end of the train....

    Why do I go there?

For ease of getting stuff that's near impossible to source in HK - and it's a "day out" for me - $2 fare right up to Sheung Shui, half fare to the frontier - and - for me - absolutely free on the Shumchun MTR 'cos I'm ancient!

What's there to lose ? {Liberty perhaps}. & being a non Cantonese speaker, I find that English is a universal language of trade when the shopkeepers want your money & return trade!

If anyone needs a battery supplier there, just PM me for email address & location of the one supplier that I have used with great success.

BTW... It IS a "good idea" to take along the Laptop when buying - just to make sure that it powers up the Laptop & can be recharged - be sure to take along a HK to 2 flat pin mains adapter too!

Having charted this course, I found it is difficult to achieve perfect results.

Loooong before I discovered the wonders of SEG. Plaza in Futian, Shumchun, I did undertake removal & repairs to dud & dieing lithium battery packs.

It was quite expensive & not 100% good after getting everything re-assembled.

No matter what, the battery case never looks anything more than a "bodge-up" afterwards.
