    5 hd channels? seriously?!

    wtf?!!? you'd imagine that being here, with all the technological advances, they'd have way more hd channels availible!!!

    hell, the majority of locals live in small places, so having HD would be beneficial in a small household, yet pccw only have 5 HD channels!?!?

    wtf!?!?!

    pricing out the pkg of all channels incl. hd, and adding in the 6m internet plan, works out to about 960hkd. WTF!?!? this is the discounted rate provided via my relo company...

    time to grab my cantonese speaking gf and have her negotiate on the street?

    Eh?

    I suspect, given for example the volumes in which the local market gobbles up pirate DVDs produced on a handheld camera in a cinema, that the market here isn't that bothered about HD - they certainly aren't going to pay a premium for it.

    But you should be able to do a bit better that HK$960 if for some strange reason you're only interested in HD content. Language of negotiation isn't much of an issue with PCCW.

    By the way, the content of these HD channels (at least the Discovery one which I have) is extremely repetitive.

    The HD content on Now is very limited.

    Most of the channels are of the Discovery, National Geographic variety. They do look good, the first time.

    But as PDLM says, its a bit repetitive.

    6m line + all the channels (assuming you have most of the premium standard channels like hbo, cinemax, movie channel, etc... nat geo, music, cartoon, a couple of porn, etc.. ) this should bring you to about $500-$550 a month, seems they are charging you about $400? for the HD channels? if it is all of them including their "woo hoo" sports HD, its about right... now broadband hd is a rip off... you also need to use their hd decoder which is another piece of crap, it gets hot even when on stand by. They only charge so much as they have exclusive rights to air the football games, iCable lost that and also hbo/cinemax to NOW.

    well, the price breakdown is

    246= 6M broadband
    488= pkg of most channels (no pr0n or india tv...few other minors)
    188= hd channels 35bucks each plus some other crap
    38=hd box rental

    total= 960/mo

    also- since it's HD they have to provide secondary line vs. sharing...this is good since i've noticed degredation on my gf's apt when streaming youtube/watching tv at the same time...

    the more i think about it, the more it sucks...everyone hates ppl who compare to 'back home'...but in nyc, i had 3 HD-DVRs with ALL channels- included about 30HD channels along with on-demand movies/shows/channels...for about 200usd...1560hkd..and this included a real broadband/cable connection...not adsl... here i'm paying 2 thirds, for one box, one adsl connection and just a fraction of worthwhile channels.

    wth!?!?

    Do you really want all the HD soccer only channels? Unusual for a septic.

    I pay $381 for 6MB broadband plus the HBO-combi package, plus the Discovery package (including Discovery HD), plus BBC News, BBC Entertainment and GMA Pinoy (for the missus), and perhaps one or two other channels. No sport though.

    I bought the HD decoder (because it used to cost a lot more than $38 to rent - the payback time was less than a year). The HD decoder also functions as a DTT decoder if you have a DTT antenna.

    Length of commitment is also a significant factor. Given how many things you've found to moan about in this town so far I guess it wouldn't be wise for you to be making a long one.

    .
    well- HD= can see clearer while sitting closer...big screens in little spaces require hd so that one can watch/enjoy the show...
