Lots of fancy things on it - I was set on it. But now I see a Pentax that is even cheaper by some $400HK so I ask to look at that. I ask which takes better pictures and this clerk says the Pentax. He gets called away and another clerk comes over he also says Pentax. Now the two clerks are there and I ask them why they are down selling me when a third clerk who been right there the whole time writing some stuff out for his customer interjected and said - you asked each of them what camera took the better picture. They are just saying it is the Pentax as that is what you asked.

I was so impressed I decided to buy one for my wife also and also a cell phone.
Yeah I'm always a bit suspicious of this "downselling" - they're probably making more money somewhere along the line with margin or model-specific commission bonus selling the cheaper product.

I had a salesman in Wanchai computer market last week desperately trying to get me to pick the cheaper Sigma flash unit over the Canon 580 Speedlite. I'd done my research and wanted the Canon....

Anyway, he opened the Canon at $3,200, which I was pretty happy with anyway, and then we got it down to $3,000... and then he introduced the Sigma equivalent, which I'd read about and didn't want, at $2,700. He then actually put the Canon under the table and started waxing on about the quality of the Sigma.... cut it to $2,500.... threw in a set of rechargeable AAs with charger... cut it to $2,390.... all the time, I'm saying, yeah, I want the Canon, and he's saying "they're the same! the same! save $600!"

They are clearly not the same.

But then, and this killed me, he took out his calculator and ADDED $21 to the price of the Canon! "EPS charge" he said. "No EPS charge for Sigma". Hahahaha. I never ever had an "EPS charge" at this shop before, what's going on la! What a load of BS!

Anyway I don't know if this Sigma fetishing was some kind of double bluff to keep me from negotiating hard on the Canon unit, or just cos the shop got a better margin on the Sigma stuff... either way, I left with what I wanted at less than list price and $400 less than Fortress, and around $19,000 less than Sogo, so whatever.

I wouldn't say the cheaper product but less-popular products.
Because, u know, most people here buy brands like Canon, Nikon and Sony, those "inferior" brands are probably full of stock.
You made the right choice for buying Canon.

The best thing to do is do not buy from any shops that do not list the price with the product, if they only have the product there and no price, then they will look at you and give you a more expensive quote.

    Yup have to second that.

They'll charge you a price they of course think they can get away with, Do your research first and check out local magazines such as pcw and e-zone for rrp and also go to the chains to get a price then take it from there.

Whilst it's generally good advice to avoid TST if you don't know your way around as there are a lot of tourist rip-off shops in TST, there are actually also some good camera shops in TST if you know where to look. Tin cheung are good Tin Cheung Camera Company ???????? - Sells cameras, lenses and related accessories and there are also some good second-hand camera shops in TST if you want film gear.

Tin Cheung will generally give you the option of grey or official, you pays your money, you makes your choice. The point is that they are honest and upfront and don't rip you off. There are of course plenty of other shops that are also good; Kowloon Photo in Yau Ma Tei, Wing Shing in Mongkok for example and if you're not looking for specialist gear/service Fortress and Broadway will be fine.

I feel for you, I feel in the same trap, and yes for not doing my homework. I was looking for a nikon D90 which sells for $1000. When I went to Happy Rich Audio he was going to sell me the D90 for $640 US. Which is a deal, but some how he was able to talk me into buying the Nikon coolpix P80 for $700 US, when I came back to NY I found the camera sells for US $240. I now am trying to dispute the chargers with my credit card company. I was wondering if anyone had a Phone Number for New Rich Audio and Video? I plan on suing them, I know this is stupid because it will cost me more money, but I do it for for self satifaction.
