I thought the 80gig version includes the Emotion chip which allows it to be backward compatible with PS2 games? but the 40 gig one does not play PS2.... ? I know mine does not play PS2 games but some of the original batch of PS3 can be compatible with PS2 discs.

I own a 40gig PS3.. bought Devil May Cry & Metal Gear Solid, have Armored Core on order, which are the only games I bought and I have not even played any of them much, think I spent an hour on MGS and it's been on the shelf ever since, half way through DMC and it's been almost 6 months, I use it as a DVD/BD player (lol)... anyways...

P0RN..... I have over 1TB disk space for that on my PC, plus the added advantage of dual screen.. ever look at the stills while watching the video on another screen?

It's something we all should try... (hah)

It honestly depends on your SKU of the PS3 for backward compatibility. I would google your model to see if it has it or not.

I know there aren't any 40GB versions that has backward compatibility. Almost all 60GB version does, and some 80GB versions.
