It varies by product - some China Xioami products like the Xiaofang cameras won't work outside of China because it requires connecting to the China Mi Cloud server, but some clever people have figured out alternate firmware.

Best to check on sites specialising in exporting to other countries to see if there are any limitations.

Google not so much... but I get your point and don't disagree with that. Privacy is dead and we leave breadcrumbs everywhere on the Internet.

That said, my browsing history & cookies is one thing ... surveillance cameras in my living room is another.

I'd be naive to assume a US company will safeguard my details at all costs - but all things considered, I probably rather the NSA know when i'm picking my nose vs. the Chinese equivalent.

When I first got my Xiaomi camera, it worked at first for a whole 10mins.....until the app informed me that there was a firmware update. Did the update, then the camera informed me in Mandarin that the device is locked to use only in China.

I had to search the internet for a way to downgrade the firmware and an older firmware file, and luckily found the information (and the file) on an English Mi forum.
