Bitcoin has never gained traction as a small value transactional currency and I doubt it ever will without a Tecent or Apple guiding development and distribution of POS apps.

Cryptocurrencies have the potential for a secure Store of Value
Apps backed by social media giants are successful as a Medium of Exchange (WePay, Alipay)

Can Facebook combine these two on a global scale? That is the question

Bitcoin is the next bubble ready to burst. The trick is to make the money before it does -

Facebook responds to Why was Rust chosen for Libra? in congressional hearing
Such a technical question coming from a US Congressman. The rest of the representatives in the room must be so confused.

This is the guy, previously in the Air Force and NSA:

    Regulators mount up!

Two of the project’s founding backers told the FT they were concerned about the regulatory spotlight and were considering cutting ties. Another backer said they were worried about publicly supporting Libra for fear of attracting the attention of agencies who oversee their own businesses.

And Temasek is in... I think India's Reliance Group should also be in the consortium given Facebook's recent investment.

iirc one of Facebook's cofounders moved to Singapore. This could be a way to attract more tech guys and businesses down the line. I personally hope that Libra takes off - not so much because of the crypto aspect (I think Facebook bucks would be just as good for the most part) but because of what it might do for the SEA economy given the currencies in SEA.
