Done some reading about the app fiasco. This article covers some key issues well, though not really focussed on design issues like the title implies.

Seems just about everything went wrong:
Not clearly stated expectations
Coding team with a startup mentality
Only 60 days to create, test and implement
Poor usability strategy
Coding issues
App download issues
Connectivity issues
Not properly tested
Some organisers learned about the app the day before
yada, yada, yada...

And no, you can’t blame us old folks (you know... the ones who designed the internet)
