How to access WhatsApp back up?

My WhatsApp is backed up to my Google drive automatically every month. But I can't seem to find it on my Google drive?? Any ideas? T

There's one folder for each WhatsApp account ("WhatsApp <number> Backup")

Did you reinstall WhatsApp and restored this backup from Drive?

I haven't reinstalled WhatsApp recently myself. I changed my phone last year and my ex partner sorted it all out for me. Should reinstall my WhatsApp again now?

To be clear here, the Drive backup is not meant to be user-accessible - it's for restoring/migrating the WhatsApp app, not for reading your messages outside the app.

When you install WhatsApp app on a new phone, first time you start the app it'll check if there are backups (assuming that phone is logged in with the same Google account used to backup the WhatsApp content on the old phone) and ask you if you want to restore it.

You can't "read" messages out of the Google drive backup.

Oh I see now. So how can I 'read' the older WhatsApp messages outside of the app/Google drive?

You can download WhatsApp, restore the messages then export from the app. Can take ages and usually crashes my phone
