Adding Visa/MC to Google Wallet on WearOS

So... went out and got a WearOS 3 watch and got pretty much everything to work without a problem except that I cannot seem to add any HK based Visa/MC cards to the wallet - Amex worked perfectly.

    • HSBC EveryMile / Red - they've switched to some in-app authentication and can only add to the phone wallet, cannot add it to the watch wallet.
    • SC Cathay - They don't have their own app based auth, but their SMS auth seems to work only on the phone wallet.
    • Citi (some rewards card..) - Same as SC

Has anyone been able to add a Visa/MC to their WearOS / Google Wallet? Not Samsung.. not Apple... Google WearOS.

Have not really bothered calling the customer service hotlines as I suspect this is a rather obscure issue for which I'll get the run around and/or might crash their chatbots.

I have a OnePlus 11 android phone and a Samsung Watch 4 running WearOS.

I had no problems adding HSBC Mastercard (credit and debit)

Recently, I had trouble adding Citibank Visa - I think because I changed phones and reformatted my watch a few times, I had run into their limit of 5 devices. I called Citi. After a few weeks, they called and told me to install on google pay on the phone in the next few minutes (with success) but I could not add it to the watch.

Mox works. I think Livi might work too.

@ayang - to confirm Citi customer support knew what a wearos watch is and help d you out?

I think the watch 4 is wearos 2, right?

Will try the HSBC debit card but am not too optimistic as they have changed some auth protocols over the last couple of weeks on their Google Pay implementation

Maybe this explains my issue - why Red cannot be added to wife's phone. Signature was no issues.

Ok I was able to add the TapNGo Consumption Voucher to the watch wallet.. good enough. Off to the champagne bar...

Will try and chase down HSBC next week.

Pixel 7 Pro + Samsung Watch 4 Classic, running WearOS 3.5. I have SC Simply Cash Visa card added with no issues. But my CCB Asia eye card would get stuck at the SMS auth gateway (wouldn't give me an OTP). I think it's because I previously factory reset my watch, and CCB still thinks the card is already registered to Google Wallet.

Did you add the card previously in another device? SC is responsive if I message them through the mobile banking app's inbox, so far.

Thanks .. will message them. Thought the inbox thingy was some random / horrible chat bot.

Ok did get through to HSBC and apparently the one card is maxed out on the devices it can be installed on. Which is weird as I have not reset my phone or wallet (did have it ages ago but deleted it).

Did find the SC inbox which is different from the dumb Stacy (the stacy button is where you normally would have the + button to start a new email..).

Let's see what the status is once they delete the cards from my wallet and their backend binding.

The Citi card was never used as it has been dormant for a year and only added to the phone wallet - watch did not work.

@GotIt I got this back from HSBC .. will try to get through tomorrow.

We find that if you would like to add your credit card to your watch, some devices may not be supported to add via HSBC HK APP, you can call our hotline for more assistance.
