My husband was discussing this subject with a hiking buddy recently - we have a Garmin which was never much good in the car (when we had one) - and the result of their discussion was "get a GPS add-on to your nokia mobile phone" . I was not paying much attention but you might want to look into this too......

The shortcoming of phones is they don't have a great GPS processor. I have the HTC Touch Cruise, which is hyped as a GPS device -- has turn-by-turn voice command, comes with a car mount, 12v power plug and all. In my experience, it rates about a 5 on a scale of 10 for GPS quality. Where it really lacks ability is where you need it most -- in the concrete canyons.
