Energy saving light bulbs are scam and not environmentally friendly.

    I am guessing that you guys are going to be right and the cause is the light fittings. The light fittings are quite old and bayonet style.

    Personally - I loathe the NON - Bayonet style - Not only has to be very careful to ensure that it is screwing in before releasing the hand to screw it some more - but the outer metal might well be electrically "hot" - and give you the very last shock you will ever experience in your life!

    Eh? If you have wiring which gives you a shock when the device is switched off (you do of course switch the light off before changing the bulb don't you?) then you really, really need to get a competent electrician to inspect it and fix it.
