    Wireless help for thick person

    Hi everyone

Bit dumb on this sort of thing so simple help appreciated, just bought a Sony Vio with wireless and have no idea what to do to set up the wireless.
I currently have now broadband so would image staying with them for wireless.

    Questions are

What do I need to use wireless?
Where do I purchase anything I need? I.e. would now broadband set it all up for me if I buy it from them?

    Thanks guys

well depends, at home you just have to get a wireless router for about 300HKD, get a good brand ie. buffalo Airstation, Berklin, linksys etc.
The basic setup is quiet easy most even offer som form of plug and play feature, so you can go online as soon as you connected the router.
And you can always ask here if you need help with the more advanced features.

For hotspot use at places like starbucks and such there are different options, but you can usualy purchase refill accounts on the spot. 30min for XXHKD and so on, thats what i did and it was easy and suitable for me since i rarely bother to carry that hog of a notebook i have around.

Alternatively you could just search for unsecured wireless connections and use them to download several gigs a day...not that I do that, of course

Exclamation A Little help from IT specialist

Just came across to help to on this.
You can purchase a cheap wireless router (HUB) from a place called
Golden Plaza in Shamshui Po, by taking the MTR.
You should be able to find everything to do with computers and accessories there very cheap.

Most Routers will have instructions by default its very simple to set it up yourself.

But first do register your broadband service, you might like to check most of the services first whilst you are about in Shamshuipo, as you will find alot of the broadband promotions outside the building (at the sidewalk).

Find a service which you think is best for your area, they should be able to tell you after making a call to check free for you. Now is by far the most expensive of them all, I personally prefer Hutchinson 10M, which is very stable and fast. (I get this plan for HK$128 per month).

I hope this will help you decide on the service and then go get a wireless router too

I've got a question...can I use the same connection for my desktop PC as well as for my laptop? Would my desktop PC then require a wifi card?

You can use a wired or a wireless router. Wired routers have ethernet ports for cables to your desktops and laptops. Wireless routers have these and a built-in radio that you would connect to with a wireless lan card in your laptop/desktop.

So I could share an internet connection between my laptop, PDA and desktop if I had a wireless router, right? I'd be able to use wifi and at the same time run a cable to my desktop pc's ethernet card, correct?

    thanks disco!
