Any complaints on HGC (vs. Netvigator)?

We are going to try to sign up for our new flat in Happy Valley. Assuming we can get it there (I will check tomorrow, Winfield Bldg.), any complains about HGC's service?

I'm interested in reported outages, real speed (particularily to non-HK sites), customer service, etc. I work from home, so my Internet service is crucial.

The reason HGC seems better it's because of the 10Mbps (although I understand that that's shared anyways in some ways). Netvigator only seems to offer 6Mbps at more expensive to boot.

And they have this asinine thing where they block outgoing SMTP. So you can only send email using the netvigator account. This is a pain in the ass if you use multiple email accounts.

It's going to suck to have to sign up for good cable tv service separately, but hey, can't miss the World Cup (only on i-Cable, I hear)!

    Thanks!

I'm on HGC and also work from home, and so far it's been flawless. Mind you, I've only been here about 3 weeks...but the initial signs appear good

The 10mb VDSL line is dedicated, which should mean that you don't share with anybody else.

Actually, Netvigator do offer an 8Mbps package. Main difference I have noticed is that Hutchison, even after all these years, still cannot provide an acceptable level of customer service in English. I rang up their sales number and was asked to speak in Cantonese before I had given her my name. Imagine if I couldn't speak the lingo! PCCW is on the whole much better though they farm out their installation service to a non-English speaking outfit.

    Thanks for the responses.

Yeah, I found that out just now when I called them and they, in broken English, told me somebody from their English speaking team would call me back. I had to leave the house 20 mins later so I don't know if they called back.

Just called again and they don't have coverage in our building anyways : (

How much are you paying for Netvigator's 8Mbps service?

I'm on their 6Mbps service but have been offered the 8 for around $180 with an 18 month contract.

    Hgc

    Hi All,
I personally have a not-too-bad experience with HGC (yeah it's true that you would get very frustrated while waiting on the phone trying to reach the customer services dept.). But They are fairly ok otherwise I would have swtiched to Navigator long ago. Btw, This is my 3rd year with HGC.
Recenlty, I've set up the wireless connection at home with the existing connection and I'm pretty happy with it coz I found that situation of the cutting-me-off-from-the-internet is finally gone. Now, with my wireless, it's much more stable than b4. hehe.
Also, the speed of connection is pretty fast, maybe it's due to the no. of people using HGC in my building? I asked the HGC and they said there are not many ppl using it in my buliding.

Netvigator is also pretty good but it's expensive if you compare its price to others but my friends said it's very stable the connection.

    Sorry 4 my lousy English.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,

at my old apartment building i found icable to be way faster than netvigator. as previously discussed, however, this might just have been due to the fact that a lot fewer people were using i-cable. food for thought

Yeah, from my previous experience in the US, cable modems tend to be faster than DSL, but it seems from previous posts that i-Cable has developed a very bad reputation for reliability.

Is this still the case, or has the competition forced them to clean up their act?

    hell yes

    1. Frickin HGC CSR will not help me because the first letter they have in my passport number does not match my passport number even though it was clearly written on the contract.

    2. They ask me to update my passport number even though it was their mistake by faxing in a copy of my passport. Well what the freak if I don't have a fax machine? Did they let me send them an email with a digital photo of my passport and my contract with the passport number clearly written on it? NO!

    3. I canceled the contract last year and they still kept me on the billing until now. They gave me a bill for the whole year when they didn't even give me any notice for a whole year.

    4. We freakin returned back their stupid dsl modem last year and they still did not cancel my contract.

Everyone who works at HGC broadband are so gdm incompetent. Or at least all the people I've dealt with are.

On the other hand .. just had a very positive experience with netvigator yesterday.

Our DSL modem (about 5 years old) stopped working. Called their customer service line and after about 3 or 4 attempts got through to a support person. He wanted to send a field support guy on Tuesday -- no, we run an internet business and need to be online 24/7. Finally after about 10 minutes of negotiating he sent the technician on Monday with a new modem and we got back online.

    Not too shabby ...
