You haven't been keeping up with the news, or even reading that article have you?
Google has been redirecting google.cn users to google.com.hk, now in order to meet new commie party rules they host a landing page for google.cn in China but any click redirects back to google.com.hk.
It remains to be seen whether the small change they made in the last few days will be enough to satisfy the chinese authorities. They may still lose their licence yet! As it expires today, we should know pretty soon.
I wonder why google maps (maps as well as ditu) recently has those blank areas in the east of Shenzhen and south of Zhuhai.
In Shenzhen the map ends at Yan He Lu ( 沿河路 ) near Bei Dou Lu ( 北斗路 ) and in Zhuhai (among other areas) the whole area near the Gongbei border is blank.
The satellite pictures are clear though. In mapabc.com those maps are available.
Google Maps, according to the China Daily, also don't have permission to offer their mapping service in the Mainland.
Google not on mapping list
This link shows the updated situation for the reachability of google services in China. Unfortunately maps is not listed.
