my Tenda router is terrible, help!

I recently got a fast internet connection, and through a network cable it ois excellent (100mbs on speedtest.net). However, I have a cheapy Tenda router, and whenever I connect through wifi my connection is horrible. I.e. It cuts out, it's slow, and when I ran the speedtest it was about 4mb/s (ans in actuality for general browsing it is sometimes painfully slow)

I assume it must be my routerbs problem.. Can anyone suggest a good router which should get the most out of my internet connection? Preferably something available in 1 of the mainstream electronics shops such as fortress, but if not let me know where.

    Thanks!

What wireless device are you using? Check the box or user manual for the standard that it complies with (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11n).

ok thanks raccoon. Will do that later. Since there are 3 computers and a phone i might want to connect with, what happens if they have different compatabilities?

In general anything that is N will be backwards compatible to B / G.

I have a Tenda too, and it cuts out all the time. One of my neighbours have a Netgear, and I connect to it all the time and it never cuts out

smallnetbuilder has tested routers for their WAN throughput. Look here:

Router Performance Comparison Charts - WAN to LAN Throughput - SmallNetBuilder

Don't let anyone talk you into buying a Cisco ASA 5505, those are overkill.

From routers I've tried in that benchmark (Linksys, belkin), in real life situation I can get maybe half or less the declared benchmarks eg. having some bit torrent session running, sharing the line with other PC's and having many sockets open. Some wifi N routers can't even handle on the wired network even 1/8 of what the wifi N network can handle.
