Unhappy Still can't fix NAS issue! Must be something simple but I'm out of ideas....

A second pair of eyes might help...

I recently posted about my network acting all funny... I have reset and reconfigured my router but doesn't seem to have helped.

Issue: if i ping my NAS on the internal network the IP address it resolves to is 203.198.80.62 and is unreachable. I have given it a fixed IP of 192.168.2.3, still doesn't fix the problem.

If I ping 192.168.2.3 or browse that IP I can see all the files on my NAS etc but seems too slow to be able to stream video.

If I look at the DHCP list of clients on my router - it shows the NAS in the list with the IP of 192.168.2.3.

If I ping my router by name name it resolves to an unreachable IP of 203.198.80.62.
An IPCONFIG shows the default gateway is 192.168.2.1.

This must be coming for the DNS on the default gateway????

My PC has IP address of 192.168.2.11 and it is NOT showing in the list of DHCP clients on my router (and I can't see the MAC address in that list)...

Like I said I have factory reset the router (a Belkin N1) and reconfigured it.

Internet is working (hence able to write this post).

    I'm all out of options!!!

    Thanks

    Hi HKNewBi

I guess you've tried flushing the DNS as previously advised in your other thread, have you checked your "lmhosts" file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc on Vista) to see if there are any entries in there which could be causing problems? If there aren't, you could always try putting in the correct entries in there too see if that helps.

As for your IP of 192.168.2.11 not showing in the DHCP list, are you sure haven't set a static IP for your PC?

Show us your routing table from your PC. Windows (command prompt):
    print route

    Linux/Mac:
    sudo route -n

Through in the ipconfig output as well

yes, i tried flushing the DNS as advised on the previous thread but didn't seem to change anything. The PC I used yesterday to post this thread i rebooted today and it now has an IP address of 169.254.158.62! And I can't access the net from it.

I checked LMHosts (nothing in there that isn't commented out) and it doesn't have a static IP address.

I will post up the ipconfig /all and the route print outputs in the next 2 posts.

I am wondering if my Belkin Router is just knackered? I factory reset it and also checked if it has the latest firmware (which it reported as being up to date).

Thanks again for your help. This is really sending me loopy.

The 203.198.80.62 is the PCCW address. Is there something in your router that is forwarding traffic to the NAS or is it set up so the NAS's MAC address puts it in the neutral/DMZ zone?

Can you set the Router to give the NAS a fixed IP address based on the MAC address of the NAS? It will still DHCP but the IP it is given will be fixed (I do this for my NAS so everytime my router goes down it doesn't pull a new IP address out of the loop and make me reconfigure a few things here and there).

try ping homenas. (with the dot at the end)

What you have is a classic WINS / DNS issue.
