I just installed it on my netbook (Samsung n150) to replace the awful bundled Win 7 starter, its early days but I'm really impressed! So much quicker and easier to use.

Google's Chrome web browser runs best under Linux, but depending on your netbook hardware might be better or worse than Firefox due to overhead. Generally modern hardware runs Chrome a lot faster. Consider using Chrome's sync functionality if you have other computers.
For video chat you have Skype or the Google Talk Video Chat plugin. You might want Wine to run Microsoft Office, but depends on what you are using it for.
