buy a monitor or a laptop?

I am going to be an exchange student at HKUST for 1/2 or a full year. I have a decent computer at home now that will pretty much go unused during the time I am gone.

I am considering parting the computer and bringing everything along (without the case) and rebuilding it in HK. The only problem is getting a monitor while there. LCDs are not very cheap but I would be able to bring it back home and continue to use it. A CRT would be relatively cheap but I don't know what I would do with it at the end of my stay.

I could buy a new laptop here or there but it seems like a big investment and I probably wouldn't use its portability much. Once I got home I would have the laptop and my old computer.

currently A 15” or 17” LCD is about half the cost a low end laptop now….

    Suggestions?

also by chance does anyone know how BT friendly the HKUST network is?

    BT friendly?

BT friendly as in is it allowed or not. Some university networks in the states have heavily monitored and controlled networks to prevent software like bit torrent from running. I was just wondering because it's how I plan on keeping up with some TV while there.

Well considering how fast computers depreciate, you may want to consider taking your current pc with you just to make sure you are getting the most mileage out of it (since it'll be idle while you're away). Then you can pick up a cheap CRT when you are here, (should be plenty on the 2ndary market), and sell it upon your return perhaps.

Alternatively, sell your pc before you come over and use the $ to pick up something locally.

Can't help you on the BT question, however I'd be surprised if you can't get around any of their controls one way or another, good luck!
