PCCW Netvigator Windows 7 Update Error

Since moving in and getting set up with PCCW's not very fast 8mb broadband with their netvigator router, neither our laptops nor our desktop have been able to update anything from Windows (eg. defender essentials and windows 7 standard updates), is there a known reason or fix?

I've just tried calling them to see if I could switch off the router firewall they will probably have installed, but the phone just rang unanswered.

    New router required? Recommendations?

Any other thing I can try?

Thanks, but why could it not be a router issue?

I'd be surprised if it was an error on my machine because it's 3 PC's having the same issue. 3 seperate PC's all developed the error when we switched to this new service.

2 were updating fine whilst we were connecting through an internet connection at a serviced apartment before we moved here. Then the home PC is a newly installed clean install of Windows 7.

Try disabling the Windows firewall temporarily and start the updates manually; re-enable after download / installation. Works for me using Windows Vista.

(Strangely though sometimes it does update automatically)

pin - I don't think that's our problem, our desktop has been in shipping on it's way to us here since early Jan, no updates have been done since the 4th jan. Our laptops last updated when we were in a serviced apartment, we left there on 12th Feb.

Raccon - already tried that, I've even uninstalled the free AVG from our desktop because that didn't provide an option to just switch it off.

Thanks for the help though, I'm at a bit of a loss what this could be other than some firewall on the router/modem, as that's the only thing that connects all 3 machines.

Incidently both the laptops were bought new just before Christmas and I think I already mentioned but our desktop was a fresh new install, as we upgraded to a solid state drive at the beginning of Jan.

What are the error codes? The article I linked to offers some suggestions on how to debug an failed update.

Still not got this resolved, every other software we can find updates and downloads fine, it's just anything related to Windows (IE, security, general updates, troubleshooting tools, etc) that doesn't work.

The error message when I try the updates manually is 8024402f.

I've tried loads of different fixes I've found online, I just can't find anything that could be linking and causing all 3 machines to have this error, other than the router/homehub.

I'm stumped, I fear my next step will be to call out a PCCW technician.

This may help in some vague way:
Appendix G: Windows Update Agent Result Codes

Personally, whenever I need to apply such a big patch such as Windows 7 SP1, I slipstream the update and re-install Windows. I realise this is a bit extreme for some(most?) people, but I find it the best way for me.
Slipstream means.. create a new Windows install DVD with the SP1 files already added to it.
Yes, this is a legal method.

Try WSUS Offline? I've certainly seen some recent XP patches that are broken and Windows Update couldn't proceed with.
