2 questions from a new arrival

We just arrived this week, and I am hoping some of you more experienced expats can help me solve a couple of tech issues I am having.

1- Where can I find a VOIP router to use with my vonage? I couldnt bring the Linksys VOIP router I had in the US because it was 115/60. I went to the Wanchai Computer Center, but everyone I asked looked at me like I had 4 heads. Fortress did not have them either.

2- Which VPN/Proxy can you reccomend for my PC and iPad. I am looking to mainly stream Hulu and other online tv streaming sites. My priorities are speed, reliability, price.

    Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I admit I have no clue what you are talking about but you may have more luck in this computer mall

Wan Chai Computer Centre, 298 Computer Zone, Oriental 188 Shopping Centre

or there is the Golden Computer Centre in Sham Shui Po area which deals in the esoteric.

Hey, look, there's a dude over here's got 4 heads!

And apparently there's something stuck up his vonage! (whatever that is!)

Do you remember which Linksys router model you were using back home? I'm sure you can buy it over here too.

You should have brought the router and just bought a new power block for it (assuming it had an external power block).

Yes, I realize that now. I assumed they would be as common here as they are in the US, so I would be able to find one easy enough. Hindsight is 20/20.

And it seems like most routers will indeed work with Vonage.

Here's another list of "tested routers" https://secure.vonage.com/static/von...chnical.html#2

I'd follow these instructions on your existing router (PCCW?) and see if you can get a dialtone.

Maybe I've misunderstood the terminology, but I understood a "VOIP router" to be a router which also has an additional (RJ11 rather than RJ45) port into which you can plug a traditional analogue telephone and which wouldn't need a connected PC to be permanently switched on to make a phone call.

You are correct. The VOIP router we had in the US plugged via CAT5 into my Linksys 3100. Our cordless phone base station plugged into it via a standard RJ11. No PC interface necessary.
