I thought that 8 meg was their default minimum. I live in the sticks and that's what we had to have when we connected.

The A in ADSL stands for asymmetric. This means that downloads are always faster than uploads. Have a look here for more information.

    http://www.internode.on.net/support/...ations_of_ADSL

Im surprised that someone reports 400kb as their upload speed if they are on ADSL.

    thanks! they quoted some interesting figues there.. for a 1.5 M d/load - a 256K upload?

I guess the key question is how much the ratio may vary for me? its not like I can move house so easily but I would like to maximise if possible, they tell me the 100M lines are not an option and 6M is the best I can get .. no other companies provide service -

I do wonder if the modem is dodgy - the "new" one they gave me a few months ago doesnt look so new!

For a 6Mbit/s downstream connection the nominal maximum upstream capacity is about 600kbit/s.

I suspect that whatever you are using to measure upload speed is measuring kbytes per second (not kbit/s), so yes, 64kbytes per second is about the most you could expect on a 6Mbit/s connection.

It's only the 100Mbit/s+ connections that are symmetrical. All the lower ones use DSL technology which is inherently asymmetrical.

And to mine. Putting a cap on the total upload speed by whatever application you're using will undoubtedly improve your ability to simultaneously download/surf. I cap my bittorrent uploads at 40 kB/s which allows me to download/surf as if I wasn't uploading. When I remove the upload cap download and especially surf speeds become unbearable.

Ditto. 30 or 40 kB/s seems to be ok for this.
