Question Internet at Grand Promenade [Sai Wan Ho]

    Hey guys,

During the 5 years I've been living at Grand Promenade, I've used TgConnect for internet which was free the first couple of years and later relatively cheap compared to competition.

Now, it's turned dead slow over the last few months and overseas websites makes me feel like I'm on dial-up.

    Time for a change.

Unfortunately, there's no fiber from anyone going to Grand Promenade despite being a relatively new building.

From my research, the best choice is PCCW 30M which is the max available.

Any feedback from others at Grand Promenade on their internet service, if you're on PCCW 30M or others, I'd love to hear from you as I'm considering signing up for PCCW 30M. They've offered me $177 per month.

    I've got NOW TV already.

    Thanks guys.

How much is TgConnect? Im in a different building, but use TgConnect as well. I think it's exclusive to Henderson buildings. Im on 2 years free service which I think will expire in a few months, so kind of in the same boat as you and wondering whether to switch or stick with TG. The price of TG will be one factor.

Performance wise, I have not have any complaints with TG over the past few months. Its not super fast, but not bad either.

Interestingly, my building is brand new (well, 2 years old now) and TG provide 100MB fibre. But PCCW could only run 8mbps service when I checked 2 years ago. How can a new 60 storey building in the middle of the city only support 8mbps (but 100mb for Hendersons own subsidiary). I think the bastards at Henderson are blocking out the competition in their own developments.

    Thanks pin.

bdw: Exactly my thought as well. I bet you they block out the competition. I would not be surprised if that was the case.

I pay about 800 per year for TGConnect which of course is very cheap, but the speed has really gone down hill for overseas sites. I've talked to them, but they say there's nothing they can do. Thanks. Even YouTube hardly streams 360p. It seems there's just too much action on their bandwidth and I'm not getting any of it.

BDW when I moved to HKG my building was pretty much new. While older buildings in my area were getting upgraded to faster PCCW mine was stuck on 8M, so it happens!!

I used 30M PCCW when I was in Tung Chung and the speed performance from 8M was great. For usenet (where the server farms were based in the US and EU) my connections were pretty much maxed out (at 3MB/s). In fact even when I was on a 8M connection my usenet connections were also maxing out at 0.8MB/s.

For streaming (via a proxy) with PCCW 30M things were pretty good as well. When I was an 8M connection had lots of buffering issues mind you.

On TgConnect now, I dont experience youtube problems, and even more heavy usage like bittorrent (which generally is connecting to overseas clients) usually downloads a few MB/second. Its notihing to brag about but fine for my usage. So I guess the problems may be in Grand Prom rather than the TgConnect network as a whole. But its just a guess.

    the cheapest!

Basically they are all pretty similar now.

Astraweb has a good offer for US$96 a year.

I would also suggest getting a block account with someone like Blocknews for a filler.

Alternative is Supernews for US$99 a year topped up with block account with either Blocknews or Astraweb.

Giganews if fantastic, as it has a server in Hong Kong, but freaking expensive at around US$20 a month for unlimited usenet only and US$30 a month if you want VPN, usenet browser, etc. But it does mean super fast connections to the local server.

As present I'm with Frugalusenet (only 100 days retention, but super cheap at US$60 a year) and filler with Astraweb. But I'm only getting connections of 2MB/s, as this is the max bandwidth allowed for foreign servers with HKBN.

For someone like me, on HKBN (and it seems for TgConnect customers) this will mean you will be able to get a max connection as you are guaranteed a full connection to the local server. I've tested giganews out and I'm getting close to 10MB/s.
