Ummm, no - Apple care quoted $4950.

Where did you get $1968 from? Perhaps a different model?
If you check USA based message boards, you'll see that the HK price is in line with USA price...

There is a computer mall near golden in ssp were I saw lots of notebook parts, incl. LCDs. Went there coz my old Samsung notebook had a missing W key - no problem to find it there.

I think it was in Capital Bldg on Un Chau St.

Apple care protection plan is HKD 1968..Only an extended warranty....but i dont think its useful when it comes to damage inflicted by handling..

Correct, I was thinking of AppleCare+ which apparently is only for iPhones. They charge US$50 for user induced damage. Be nice to see that extended to laptops though.

I know that apple charges an arm&leg&2 toes to fix such a problem.
Are there any significantly cheaper alternatives in Hong Kong?
Are you brave enough to repair it yourself? The LCM can be bought from Taobao for as little as RMB 280 but you need to take it apart like the video shown below.
Or... you can buy the complete upper assembly from RMB 1200 depending on the model.

    Complete upper assembly:

Before buying, you need to open the lcd assembly to look at the lcd model...

3 companies makes modules for mb air..
lg philips lgxxxxxx series, AU Optoelectronics bxxxxxx series and ChiMeiOptoelectronics...

After you have confirmed you model, goto taobao, buy it and fix it...

280 sounds too low. Should be 3 to 4 times that much.

280 wasn't even the lowest, there are sellers selling as low as 220 RMB. I wrote 280 because lots of listings were @ 280 and it had many satisfied customers. See for yourself: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=14675641913

Of course HowardCoombs didn't say which model he has so it could be more expensive like the 13" newer model.

mhm, it's just the glass and not the complete module incl. ccfl backlight. Possible, I rather pay a bit more though and buy in Hong Kong. So I had a look at ebay.com .... and filtered for items located in Hong Kong:

Sadly I presume that most are China sellers with a dishonest item location.
