Nice scanner. We didn't go the automated route though. Scanning is a bit of a hobby for my OH. He enjoys the process of looking at the photos as he does it, plus he is doing film, photo and really old glass slides. We got the Epson V700 in UK.

Finally, some useful stats on consumer hard drive reliability:

    http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21...-should-i-buy/

Unfortunately Hitachis seem a bit thin on the ground these days.

The conclusion that Blackblaze draws is buy 4TB Seagates or WD Reds, but in HK WD Reds cost 30% at the 4TB mark which is a massive premium. I believe that the 36 month reliability chart for Seagate is skewed by a couple of bad models, so I don't think the 30% premium for Reds is worthwhile.

If I were buying hard drives again, I'd look for Hitachis and if they were unavailable or crazily expensive, get a bunch of Seagate 4TB drives. Which, come to think of it, is pretty much the mix I have now.

I got a 416play from Mong Kok last year. I checked the price and it was a few dollars more than the best price I could get easily overseas, so it didn't seem worth bothering with shipping etc. This company are official Synology sellers.

I used Jumbo Computer for quite a few Synology NAS units over the years.

Gents any update advice on Synology 4-6 bay NAS for home file sharing?

I have a few 2 bay WD networked drives that I want to combine into 1 4-6 bay box* to save space, heat, noise over having 3 different networked drives.

I run a Shield TV which does the heavy lifting for movies, Tv shows and so on, so the NAS need only share the files over my local network.

*I have at least 20TB of files + 20TB backup of same.

    You need 40TB of storage?

6 x 10TB and you can create two raid volumes for some amount of reliability.
