    IT Support Charges

Anybody here give me a guideline of what is a reasonable rate for IT support for small business over here, preferably English speaking?

Something like an hourly rate would be handy!

As when getting quotations from companies it would be helpful to know I'm not getting ripped off with the foreigner rate.

Failing that would it be advisable to get a local to get the quotations for me?

If it's something of the order of $700-$800 per hour, you're probably not being ripped off too much

I never understand how people can expect any type of assistance when they don't provide adequate details.

If I told you $80/hr, would it help you at all?

Sorry dude, but thought the small business requirement for IT support was good enough for people to provide a rough idea of what they are being charged by outsourcers out here.

    for details if it helps

    8 Users/ Workstations
    Hk Island location
    file server
    blackberry server
    Internet/ networking

IT support required would be server and workstation maintenance, upgrades, software patching, hardware failures etc

Sounds like its comparable to London rates, I was expecting it to be cheaper here!

Support fees vary from peanuts to crazy, it all depends what you need or want. How many platforms, types of software, legit software, lock down restrictions, etc.

My wife's co. pays HK$10k/mo for 15 users Kowloon side, mix of XP, 10.4, 8.04/8.10. Printer is outsourced to Fuji-Xerox, mail on Googles, the major expenses were the infrastructure hardware: gigabit switching, VPN firewall, and Apple file server with UPS. Generally have to import such hardware to avoid retarded markups and to actually get good products, e.g. HP ProCurves.

SteadyState, and non-Windows boxes are great ways to save support costs.

    Thanks,

There's nothing fancy in out setup, just MS Windows XP/ Server 2003 and a BES server.

But eventually we would want to upgrade to Vista or the new OS when it comes out, probably means getting new workstations though.

From my understanding the hourly rate for server/desktop support is pretty standard fair, should not be that much deviation unless your office is in the middle of nowhere.

I know hardware costs vary depending on setup, that's why I've been asking for a guide on hourly rate, which should be just the labour charge so its easier to compare!
