    IMac Repair

Hi all, I have a 2011 27 inch iMac that decided to die on me over the weekend. I think it's the hard disk that is causing the problem as although I can't boot into OSX, I can boot into single user mode and when I check the drive using fsck it gives errors.

Seeing as the computer is large and very heavy, does anybody have any recommendations for a reputable repair service that can either do onsite repair or collect the computer? I don't really want to have to cart it in to the apple store as I live in Tung Chung.

    Cheers.

    Do you still have Applecare?

When was your last data backup?

Was the drive making clicking sounds before it died?

Changing a hard disk on '11 iMac is pretty straight forward, but it's keeping the display panel and glass dust free when reassembling it is a right bitch.

Yeah I also have a 2011 iMac 27" and I was amazed at how simple it was for the repair guy to open it all up (repaired under AppleCare for a malfunctioning DVD drive)

Check out Youtube tutorials. Many give detailed step-by-step instructions. Replaced a 260GB HD with a 1.5TB model on an old 24" 2007 iMac years back. Your model innards should be much easier to access. Good luck.

You will need to fork out some $ for some tools in order to do it properly. This website seems useful:

I did some more research and seems this is actually a graphics card problem that is very common on the 2011 27" iMac. Apple will replace for free up to four years after purchase apparently so will try them first.

Firstly they will check that the serial number of the iMac is eligible for the replacement program.

Then they will run a video test specifically for this batch. If you iMac passes, no matter if you are still experiencing video issues, it will not be free.
