It's $148/month for unlimited 5G home broadband. The 200GB FUP just means they will NOT automatically slow you down by default, but they reserve the right to do so if they think you are being a dickhead. But it's case by case scenario and they will not document what their exact actions will be.

FUP is a good thing. It means only dickheads will ever be slowed down. Other plans that do not have FUP are the ones that do some kind of hard cutoff or start slowing you down exactly when you reach the limit of 200GB.

The Smartone guy told me I can take the router and use it anywhere within HK, although coverage may not be as good in some areas. I have not tried this myself.

Seriously! If that's the case, that's really awesome for me as I can carry it between resident and my office.

So how much is it to buy this smartone 5G router and how long is the contract?

Smartone offers a free 7 day trial on their 5G Home Broadband

Reception is dependent on your location. At the shop location and using a 5G SIM card with 5G Sim router, I got 615/120 Mbps.

At home was getting around 50/3 to 120/15 depending on the time of day. Managed to get 210/18 this morning.

It’s quite stable and certainly better than Netvigator 6M/8M line.

    T&C’s

    1. SmarTone Home 5G broadband service is only applicable to designated service addresses2. When the monthly data usage reaches 200GB, the data service can still continue, but the priority of using the network will be relatively low3. The contract period is 24 months. If the contract is terminated early, it will incur a calculated damages cost of $238x the number of remaining contract periods4. The monthly fee for renting the device is $65, and an additional prepayment of $1,500 is required. If you use automatic transfer, the prepayment fee of $1,500 can be waived.5. Customers who newly apply for this service can enjoy a cooling-off period of 7 days from the effective date of the service.6. Newly opened stations need to bring a valid residential address certificate for the past three months7. Within 14 days from the date of cancellation of the service, the customer must return the required device, otherwise the company will charge you the entire device fee of $2,310, and the non-autopay prepayment prepayment fee will not be returned. The entire device includes CPE device, adaptor, packing box. -Damaged/missing AC adapter-$150 -Lost router/damaged power plug-$2160

I decided to bite the bullet and try the SmartOne 5G home broadband service since iCable have recently been flaky and I keep spending hours without internet, especially when I have important meetings.

Initially, I was impressed. It can achieve speeds of around 250Mbit down, 50Mbit up which is more than enough for me. Video conferencing and Netflix performance is great. I can also play pubg (I'm not one to play games, but it's the only way to socialise these days) with pretty much no lag. It was just today that I noticed that traffic routed outside of Hong Kong is severely throttled. I tried connecting to a website hosted on AWS us-east-2 and achieve around 50kb/s at best, same when connecting to my VPS located in Germany. I am guessing that SmartOne are buying really cheap bandwidth.

Most people won't notice this because most of the internet is routed through CDNs with edges in Hong Kong but for smaller sites this is a real problem.

One thing that surprised me is that I still receive a dedicated IP address (no NAT, unlike a phone)
