Grab a colour laser-jet for $3000 to $4000 if you have the budget. Otherwise be prepared to buy a new inkjet every couple of years.

Inkjets just tend to drink ink. It doesn't matter if you buy a sub $1000 or over $2000 inkjet. If you don’t regularly print, the print heads get blocked, then the ink goes to flushing the blockage….nore waste of ink. They all tend to fail after 1-2 years or the print head requires replacement which is about half the cost of the printer.

After several years with ink jets, i bought a Laser. These are more reliable and less prone to failure.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. Any recommendations if I wanted something with duplex scanning/copying from an automatic document feeder?

From my own experiences I would go with laser over inkjet.

I used inkjets for years and ink would dry or clog. Got a more expensive model thinking it would make a difference, it did not. After wasting time, money and hair (from tearing it out) I finally got a laser. Difference was night and day, no more faffing around, works reliably every time.

I don't print often but I rather pay the initial higher cost of laser toner over the headache of inkjets.

I can't recommend any specific models, but I have hear good things about Brother printers too. Not sure if that applies to printer scanner combo though but if you're only scanning documents any bog standard scanner should be fine.

Thanks. The problem for me with laser printers is just the physical size.

So I finally went ahead and ordered an Epson Ink Tank printer (my previous experience of inkjets being just annoyance over the huge cost of replacing cartridges). It's only a couple of grand if it fails in a couple of years.

Quick first review: it's small and light which is great for cramped HK spaces. There's some fairly heavy software to be downloaded to set it up if you need all the features (photo printing, fax etc) but the Setup process is pretty smooth. I have it connected by WiFi on my local LAN, but USB and wired ethernet are also available. Quality is fine on the few pages printed so far. The touch-screen display works well. My only observation is that slide-out output tray feels a bit flimsy and needs care when extending or retracting. But this is a small price to pay for the lightweight compactness.

I was very happy with the ordering process through price.com.hk to Mr Computer. They happily chatted on the price.com.hk chat and then on WhatsApp in English. Payment by FPS and next day delivery by SF was smooth.

Anyone using a Canon MF64-something 3/4-in-1 printer? Keen to find out whether it has a "scan margin". Been using two Brother models, colour and B&W. All good except they have unscannable areas. Seems artificial.

For what's worth, I went last year for a Brother MFC color ink tank printer. Very satisfied with the print quality. I haven't had to refill the tank yet, it just keeps trucking like a champ. Being ink, you can also use it to print photographic paper with decent quality.

    MFC-T920DW.

One consideration with this printer was indeed size, as it's rather compact, compared to what initially I wanted, laser/led.
