Smartone-Vodafone, Data Usage & Tethered Modem

Hi, wonder if you guys here can shed some light?

Am contemplating getting this Internet on Mobile Tariff on Smartone
    $96 for 600MB Data @20MB/day, 1600 Inclusive Voice and 300 TV minutes

    Price plans - Hot offers

I know it says in the Terms & Conditions the 600MB data is to be solely used for Phone, but my question is how strict do they enforce this rule. I would want to use the phone as a tethered modem for my laptop as I have a windows mobile device, plus browsing the Internet on the phone when I'm out and about.

Anyone with a similar plan and use the tethered modem function give me the lowdown on if they catch this in the bills? If there are better networks or plans out there, let me know?

    Cheers

I had the unlimited dataplan on smartone for my HTC and used it occasionally as a modem for my laptop, Yes the contract says you're not meant to but I didn't notice anything in the bills to suggest theres an extra charge etc.

As long as you're not streaming constant data and or downloading then you should be fine. But don't quote me on this!

wow, that was a quick response!

Thanks, will not be downloading any files, just normal surfing and mail really.

Are there any better deals out there? I've no real bargaining power as this will be my first contract in HK. This was the largest amount of inclusive data I could find in any network tariff for around the $100 mark.

Seems alot better compared to One2Free, PCCW & 3HK where these networks only offer ~60MB for the same monthly tariff.

Peoples (China Mobile) are the cheapest. Unlimited data at HK$98 a month (+ HK$12 a month tunnel fee).

    However its 2G EDGE speeds.

Fine for email, IM, quick web browsing on device.

However not the fastest in the world for obvious reasons.

I'm pretty sure they will charge you extra when tethered. I'm pretty sure that happened when i tethered for a short time. They look at the port or the type of packets or something in order to work out the type of traffic.
