    PCCW single device WIFI plan

    Hi

Anyone used this yet? Its HK$28 a month:

    PCCW Wi-Fi wireless broadband

From the website it claims that PCCW has around 6,000 hotspots around HK, is this really true (i.e. what are other people's experiences with their claimed coverage).

The other one I have found is Y5Zone, which claims to have about 2,000 hotspots.

I actually cancelled this yesterday... It works - not quite as well as they claim, but it does work. You need to register once with your device (an iphone, right?) then whenever you connect to their network you will get a landing page without having to actively login. You don't, unfortunately, get Internet access until you've loaded the landing page, which means you can't grab email etc. until you've loaded up your browser.

In terms of their network, it's pretty good. There are lots and lots of access points, it covers things like every mcdonalds, starbucks, 7-11, etc. as well as the airport express and lots of public phone boxes.

Why did I cancel it? A few reasons:

    • It actively refuses access from Android devices, and although I can hack around that, it's annoying
    • I don't actually need wifi access that often in a single location, as opposed to while walking/tramming/MTRing.
    • The Smartone-Vodafone 3G is actually well within reach of the throughput of the PCCW wifi and works without having to load a landing page whenever I want fast data...

Frankly, if you think you're going to use it $1 (or less) per day is probably well worth it!

Thanks Vmlinuz, thought you might reply!

I've got 2g iphone, so sometimes my 2g EDGE connection is a bit too slow, esp when doing voip (but it works most of the time).

I may upgrade to a 3g device later on this year with a 3g data plan (at which point the wifi probably won't be an issue to me).

wifi on mtr would be sweet mind you!

Call me old-fashioned, but I really don't understand why someone would use an internet connection to make a phone call on a device (i.e. a telephone) that has a much better way of doing it...

International calling via voip seems to be cheaper. Also using SIP and Skype I can call internationally for free. This is useful when I have to make calls to countries which are quite expensive (such as certain African countries).

Wouldn't PCCW be the best people to ask that of? Call 1000.
