    Adding subtitles to an AVI

I have a bunch of AVI movies that I'd like to add Chinese subtitles to so my girlfriend can watch and follow at the same time. Likewise, I have some movies in Mandarin that I'd like to add English subs to. Does anyone here have experience with this sort of thing? I've googled a bunch of tutorials, and found many different types of software like Virtualdub, Vobsub, etc... but have no idea which one is the best/simplest method.

Check out VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists and just do a search for adding subtitles to avi files.
Sorry, I've no idea which is 'the best' software/method. I can only suggest find one that fits best with your level of knowledge and how much time you want to spend on the project.

There are a few sites that cater to video subs, enter the film and desired language and you can download SRT files that a decent video player can render on screen.

I found tutorials on how to add .srt and .sub files, but not .idx files, which is the one I have (for Shinjuku Incident, which is in mandarin and japanese mostly, therefore I need subs to understand!). VLC player isn't reading it either (idx)

I've successfully downloaded and viewed subtitles (English and Chinese) on AVI's using VLC Media player VideoLAN, Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS!

I cannot remember the file format for the subtitle file (There's a few) I tried but it was easy to find with a Google search.
